On knowing and not knowing about obeah. This essay introduces Obeah: knowledge, power, and on call of the by jack writing in the early Atlantic World , a special issue responding to short essay, recent scholarly interest in obeah and related creole and on call of the wild by jack london African-derived medical and religious practices common among enslaved Africans in the pre-emancipation Caribbean. It describes obeah and the epistemological conundrum it posed for colonists in the global Atlantic world, outlining possibilities for alcoholic essay, how scholars might study the essay london, texts that represent these practices. We position this special issue at the confluence of several recent interdisciplinary scholarly conversations: the descriptive about, reconfiguration of relations between religion and science, reconsiderations of colonial archives and their representation of subordinated peoples, and new scholarship about obeah, a medical and religious complex employed by enslaved Africans, primarily in the West Indies. In recent years, scholars of the early Atlantic world have demonstrated the inseparability of religion and science for the inhabitants of of the, that world.

Meanwhile, other scholars have begun to explore new methods for reading colonial archives and new strategies for recovering and studying the on call wild london, knowledge and beliefs of peoplesof, unfree and minority peoples. Scholars such as Ann Laura Stoler, Joseph Epstein, and Betty Joseph – the latter two focusing in particular on Caribbean archives – position archiving as an ongoing process that produces documents with histories and itineraries of their own rather than stable, complete entities with secure meanings. Thus, these scholars, as Stoler puts it, read “along the grain,” in order to uncover how “[c]olonial archives were sites of wild by jack london, command – but of countermand as well.” 4 4. One culmination of these insights about disciplinarity and colonial archives is found in studies of essay on call of the, obeah, which have instigated a vibrant, interdisciplinary conversation about peoplesof ma resume, forms of power and knowledge in the Caribbean. Scholars from anthropology, history, literary studies, and by jack london religious studies have recognized the essay questions, key role that obeah played in shaping the world that colonists and Africans inhabited and the texts that represented that world. Revising earlier scholarship that, utilizing a transparent reading of colonial texts, dismissed obeah as African superstition and essay wild london black magic, scholars from Jerome Handler and essay Kenneth Bilby to Tim Watson and Diana Paton have shown how obeah and essay wild by jack london its representations allowed colonists and pursuit essay questions Africans alike to claim rhetorical, legal, and epistemological power. 5 5. These scholars, to varying degrees, read colonial texts as capable of revealing accurate information about African belief and essay wild london knowledge that could be fruitfully juxtaposed against European epistemological categories, from “religion,” to “witchcraft,” to “Africa.” They also emphasized the essential Africanity of obeah; for example, after interviewing practicing obeah men, Williams concluded that obeah was African witchcraft that had been imported into essay about your mother, the West Indies. Handler’s and Bilby’s co-written work usefully complicated such positivist approaches by showing that the term “obeah” and its definitions as witchcraft were colonial constructions, with some material correspondents in Africans’ practices. See Handler and Bilby, “On the essay on call wild, Early Use” and of happyness “Obeah.” Their studies established the of the wild by jack, foundation for scholarship of the past decade or so, which has developed Handler’s and ma resume Bilby’s methodological skepticism of essay on call of the wild, colonial texts to examine the ways in which colonial accounts of organization, obeah served larger social, aesthetic, and legal aims.

Co-edited by two literary scholars whose scholarly work focuses on medicine and on religion, respectively, this special issue joins and expands these conversations, by analyzing previously unconsidered archives about obeah, by accounting for the disciplinary work that colonial accounts of obeah performed by managing African women’s bodies, and by tracing how the power of religion and science manifests itself in the Atlantic World. Wild By Jack London! As all of the articles in short essay of nature this special issue demonstrate, the archive on obeah contains accounts, reports, and documents that register and circulate epistemological anxieties that sometimes remained outside colonists’ textual and political control. The texts recording such anxieties occupy a space that is part of this archive yet that also extends beyond it. It is this space – one that is experiential, bureaucratic, material, and textual – that the articles in this special issue investigate and that, we argue, manifests colonial attempts to transform obeah into a set of knowable practices, on the one hand, and the range of practices, beliefs, and knowledge that Africans employed as a form of power in the Atlantic World, on the other. In this introduction, we describe obeah and the epistemological conundrum it posed for colonists in the global Atlantic World before discussing some of the on call of the wild, ways in which obeah and textual forms are entangled.
As we think this special issue demonstrates, this entanglement offers a particularly productive site at which to analyze obeah’s powers and the representation of those powers. Peoplesof Ma Resume! How to write the history of obeah. “Obeah” refers to a set of practices employed by Africans for ends that enslaved peoples perceived as socially useful, from healing and on call wild london revenge, to protection and rebellion. These practices were constituted by what we would now designate as separate medical and descriptive essay mother religious components: the knowledge and application of by jack london, herbal remedies; singing or chanting prayers or powerful words; a diagnosis of physical ailments; and of happyness essay questions mediation with non-human powers. For Africans, however (and for many European colonists as well), these practices did not belong in separate categories but were mutually constitutive. This was the case because natural and essay on call by jack supernatural, human and nonhuman realms were not perceived as separate but as realms that mutually influenced one another. Neither were the practices associated with obeah simply “good” or “bad”; obeah practitioners accessed neutral supernatural forces and attempted to employ those forces to accomplish various goals. As Dianne Stewart points out, obeah is a “protean institutional structure encompassing ethnic and peoplesof ma resume Pan-African religious cultures, which co-author an African-derived understanding of mystical power as the on call of the by jack london, capacity to use energy dynamically.” 6 6. While obeah had a material existence among African communities, it also possessed separate but related meanings in colonial texts. There, the term “obeah” originated in the early eighteenth century as a word Europeans in the Caribbean applied to African practices that, they acknowledged, acted powerfully on peoples’ bodies and minds. Alcoholic! As Jerome Handler and Kenneth Bilby have pointed out, “‘Obeah’ became a catch-all term for a range of supernatural-related ideas and behaviors that were not of European origin and which [whites] heavily criticized and condemned.” 8 8. Essay On Call Wild By Jack! As Diana Paton has shown, different European epistemologies and encounters with African practices are responsible for these varying definitions of about your mother, obeah. 9 9. See Paton, “Witchcraft, Poison, Law.” View all notes. Colonists primarily experienced obeah through its effects: ill or frightened slaves, people who refused to work, and outright rebellions inspired by seemingly mysterious leaders. As they sought to explain these phenomena, they recounted Africans’ reports that an obeah practitioner was behind a particular event and, later, speculated that obeah was to blame for unusual happenings. In doing so, colonists also sought to incorporate obeah into European epistemologies, with the goal of identifying the natural causes that, they argued, were the primary powers at essay by jack london work in the world. In the British West Indies, they applied natural philosophical methodologies for describing preternatural phenomena, or those with occult – hidden or unknown – causes in order to account for obeah practitioners, their actions, and the resulting effects. The analysis of preternatural phenomena had a long history in England, where such events had possessed a reputation for organization, being aligned with magic and divination since the on call of the wild by jack london, sixteenth century.
Because preternatural phenomena had invisible causes, they fell somewhere between supernatural, or divine, phenomena (which also lacked visible causes) and natural phenomena (which were also said to be result of terminology edu, actions by created beings, from essay on call of the humans to angels and devils). In the course of the your, seventeenth century, however, preternatural phenomena were “naturalized”; that is, their angelic and demonic causes were excluded, leaving only natural or human causes as possibly responsible for the preternatural, even when those causes were undiscoverable (and they often were). 10 10. Daston, “Marvelous Facts,” 107. View all notes At the same time, preternatural phenomena came to essay by jack, play a key role in the Baconian project of collecting unusual natural particulars in order to gain insights into the hidden workings of nature. By the eighteenth century, philosophers began to edu, argue that their work did not extend to seeking out supernatural causes; one’s focus was more properly restricted to natural causes, those that could be verified by multiple witnesses and tests. Preternatural phenomena could be part of such projects, for their natural causes could, ideally, be discovered and analyzed.
Notwithstanding this confidence in the possibility of on call by jack, discovering hidden natural causes, philosophers found it no easy or straightforward task to locate and decipher them. As Lorraine Daston points out, natural and supernatural causes were not mutually exclusive, and natural causes were not mechanistic (but indeed could seem quite unnatural, extending to include the imagination and wondrous events). 11 11. See Daston, “Marvelous Facts,” 107. View all notes As a result, philosophers worried less about whether they would mistake divine and overview demonic causes for one another than whether they would be deceived into categorizing a phenomenon as supernatural when it was not. Thus if colonial writers drew on established natural philosophical methods to guide them in analyzing preternatural phenomena and in locating their natural causes, the discovery of the causes for such events was by no means a straightforward process with an assured end. And, unlike their counterparts in Europe, colonists were immersed in worlds with ontologies that did not recognize divisions between natural and supernatural worlds but whose explanations for essay of the wild by jack, phenomena extended to include non-human as well as human agents.

As Katharine Gerbner explains in her contribution to ma resume, this issue, Afro-Caribbean people likewise faced the challenge of incorporating colonists into essay, their epistemologies: enslaved Africans in Jamaica called Moravian missionary George Caries “obea,” a term that he defined as a “Seer,” a seemingly surprising turn given obeah’s connotations with Afro-Caribbean practices, especially witchcraft. Significantly, as Gerbner shows, Caries’ case shows that obeah was not only a practice but also the “frame through which Afro-Caribbeans interpreted European religious and medical practice,” a frame that requires us to understand European natural historical and religious practices as encompassed within the category of obeah. Descriptive Essay! Colonists addressed the essay on call of the wild by jack london, challenges of representing obeah by arguing that even if enslaved people ascribed obeah’s powers to newspaper terminology, supernatural forces, a natural cause for its effects existed and could be discovered. They developed several strategies for discovering and describing these causes: they linked obeah’s apparent power to wild by jack london, Africans’ allegedly faulty understandings to suggest that Africans mistook as supernatural what were only hidden natural causes. Colonists also represented themselves as capable of of happyness essay, discovering these true, if invisible, natural causes in obeah men’s materials. For example, Edward Long suggested that, while Africans feared obeah men’s ability to wield “magic,” such alleged “supernatural powers” were “only the natural operations of some poisonous juice, or preparation.” 13 13. Grainger, The Sugar-Cane , IV.384–386. View all notes By exposing the natural causes behind “wonder-working charms,” colonists would prove obeah to be a phenomena that could be brought into the light, studied, and explained with recourse to natural causes. Such knowledge of obeah would likewise allow colonists to control its effects – to limit the circulation of and knowledge about alcoholic, “some poisonous juice,” for example. However, colonists also discovered that investigating and describing obeah practitioners’ materials rarely led them to natural causes. For example, after confidently charging the muses with revealing the components of obeah practitioners’ “wonder-working charms,” Grainger went on essay of the wild london, to list those components: Colonial accounts of obeah from the mid-eighteenth to the nineteenth century exhibit this same pattern: an insistence that obeah is newspaper edu, decipherable in terms of essay on call by jack london, natural causes and an enumeration of material objects with ostensibly natural properties, in addition to a description of those objects as obtaining power as a combination or mixture. 16 16.
For an important reading of obeah’s combinatory powers, see Dillon, “Obi, Assemblage, Enchantment.” View all notes These powerful mixtures exist both within colonial texts and in the material practices of newspaper terminology edu, enslaved Africans. For example, in one of the earliest British printed accounts of obeah, Griffith Hughes described the “Magical Apparatus” of an “Obeah Doctor”: “two Earthen Basons, a Handful of different Kinds of on call of the by jack london, Leaves, and a Piece of Soap.” 17 17. Writing in the 1750s, Hughes suggested that the obeah man used his “Magical Apparatus” as a cover for his real strategy of hiding “Pieces of broken Glass, Nails, and Splinters of Stones” on the woman’s body and pretending to pull them out with the strength of his concoction. On Call Of The Wild By Jack! 20 20. Hughes, Natural History , 15. Interestingly, by the 1790s when Edwards and Moseley were writing, accounts of the process with which obeah practitioners deceived patients had all but disappeared from colonial reports, leaving only the list of the materials in the obeah man’s magical apparatus.
Colonists’ focus on essay wild by jack, the objects in obeah practitioners’ apparatuses can be seen as enacting the empiricist principle that nature could be known by a close and careful examination of things themselves. Knowledge was produced not through recourse to texts but by experiencing or interacting with things in the world. 21 21. Short On Conservation! See Mack, “Horace Walpole.” View all notes The lists in colonial texts attempt to make obeah into something that readers can sense, observe, and thus convert into knowledge, and these lists further suggest that obeah’s causes are available through an observation of its materials. However, far from demystifying obeah, the texts attest to the ways in which obeah exceeds empiricism: as the examples above show, the lists do not uncover obeah’s hidden natural causes but instead display something of on call by jack, how obeah’s power works, that is, how the descriptive essay about, objects that constitute obeah have a power that exceeds their individual parts. Considering the “grave dirt, hair, teeth of sharks, and other creatures, blood, feathers, egg-shells, images in essay by jack london wax” was unlikely to lead observers to any conclusions about obeah’s natural causes. 22 22. Essay By Jack! Colonists’ representations of obeah, intended to demystify and discover its causes, remained in thrall to those practices, replicating them and circulating their representations throughout the of essay, Atlantic World. Indeed, as J. Writers attempted to allay these fears by aligning obeah with multiple physical diseases, including yaws and yellow fever, even as doing so further transmitted dangerous representations of obeah and indicated obeah’s power over colonists. About Mother! Colonists’ failure to locate obeah’s natural causes is manifested formally, in hybrid texts whose generic mixtures reflect the assemblages out of which obeah was constituted – its collections of natural objects, chants, “jargon,” and ceremonies. 23 23. But Grainger also admitted that obeah men could “do good” on plantations as long as they were supervised by alcoholic plantation owners. 25 25. Grainger, The Sugar-Cane , 144. View all notes By placing prose footnotes that acknowledged obeah’s usefulness and that attributed it to Africans’ imaginations alongside his poetic list of obeah’s materials and description of their preternatural powers, Grainger formally represented the debate over obeah’s powers and the ways in which obeah escaped Euro-colonial epistemological categories.
The poetic and scientific forms in The Sugar-Cane register colonists’ attempts to discover obeah’s natural causes and to categorize obeah as irrational knowledge that preyed on unsuspecting or naive Africans even as these forms also represent colonists’ recognition that obeah was a powerful, valuable phenomena constituted out of mixtures of natural and preternatural powers. Similarly, in essay on call by jack his 1800 novel Obi: or the History of peoplesof ma resume, Three-Fingered Jack, William Earle mixed the essay wild by jack, form of the epistolary novel with footnotes, in order to represent multiple explanations of obeah’s powers. While the footnotes allow the narrative of on call wild by jack london, Euro-colonial triumph over obeah to proceed undeterred, they also represent moments when colonists failed to categorize obeah or to explain it in ma resume terms of natural causes, thus introducing preternatural powers into essay wild london, the novel.
In Earle’s novel, the obeah man is successfully captured and executed, and obeah is a practice that can be eradicated by short on conservation of nature killing its practitioners. However, in the footnotes, which recount instances in which colonists failed to on call wild by jack london, control or explain obeah, it remains a power that exceeds and escapes colonial epistemologies, one that cannot be controlled by attending to natural causes. As Janelle Rodriques argues in her contribution to this issue, obeah appears in colonial narratives as a strongly disruptive force, one that unravels the short on conservation, categories and essay wild by jack london forms of social authority it often is invoked to support. Finally, we might see the novels in which obeah plays a key role, such as Maria Edgeworth’s gothic novel Belinda (1801) and romances such as Victor Hugo’s Bug-Jargal (1826) and Cynric Williams’s Hamel, the Obeah Man (1827) as evidence of colonists’ failure to alcoholic essay, account for obeah in natural or civil histories or legal reports. As Tim Watson has pointed out, the “attempt to narrate the Caribbean from the point of view of plausibility, verifiability, and essay on call of the wild london reason – realism, in other words – turns into the very forms it seeks to avoid: romantic narrative and its cognates, the gothic, the sentimental, and your the melodrama.” 27 27. Watson, Caribbean Culture , 6. View all notes As obeah moved from medical treatises and natural histories into essay of the by jack, gothic novels and essay about romances, its formal trajectory attested to colonists’ failure to locate natural causes for the forms of power they encountered in the Caribbean.
The formal mixtures that define the literatures of obeah replicate textually the ontological mixture that constituted obeah for both colonists and on call enslaved peoples. For colonists, combining poetic verses or the novel with footnotes allowed them to represent the ma resume, confusing set of practices they confronted in obeah: the presence of objects with properties that could be identified in essay on call of the wild by jack london terms of natural causes alongside practices and edu powers that they categorized as preternatural. Africans’ bodies were central to these contests over power: as Jeffrey Cottrell’s contribution shows, colonial writers responded to the material practices and powers of African women’s bodies by of the london imagining obeah as an increasingly powerful force and by developing ever more complex strategies for maintaining control over enslaved women’s bodies. As each text imagines the removal of descriptive essay your mother, obeah from the Caribbean, it both acknowledges obeah’s immense power and attempts to subordinate it by on call by jack london exercising control over African bodies. So, too, did writing about obeah offer colonial authors the anonymous essay, chance to meditate on the vulnerability of white bodies; as Justine Murison demonstrates in this issue, representing obeah forced these writers to confront the conflicted relation between the disenchanted minds they imagined themselves to possess and the unsettling openness that marked the bodies of essay on call by jack, those inhabiting the pre-emancipation Caribbean world. The literatures of obeah represent and recirculate, for edu, their readers in Europe and for colonists in the Caribbean, some of those powers even as they seek to essay on call of the, identify and categorize (and thus reduce) them. The power of obeah in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Atlantic World thus resided both in the natural and essay of nature supernatural worlds that Africans accessed with material and spiritual practices and in the formal mixtures of essay on call by jack, colonial texts. Indeed, for colonists and for newspaper edu, European readers, obeah’s power was located precisely in the assemblage of obeah practices and colonial representations of obeah – at a point that Stephan Palmie describes as “a singularly dense mesh of social praxis with its representation.” 28 28. We can find in these sources, in other words, the essay by jack, outlines of the assemblages they sought to generate – the felt texture of the common world into which they imagined readers, colonial authorities, and obeah practices and practitioners. 37 37. Here we think that literary and literary-historical scholarship of the kind this special issue presents has something distinctive to offer interdisciplinary-minded scholars who are interested in these questions. 38 38. Literary scholars who have written extensively about obeah include Srinivas Aravamudan, Elizabeth Maddock Dillon, Alan Richardson, Candace Ward, Tim Watson, and both of the editors of this special issue, among others. Essay Of The! View all notes Our turn in this direction is motivated, at least in part, by the by now well-recognized asymmetries between historians’ and literary scholars’ treatment of each other's’ work.
Eric Slauter has argued that the differences between literary scholars and historians – and, in recent years, the willingness of literary scholars to newspaper, cite historians compared to the general paucity of citations from historians to literary scholars, a differential he terms the “trade gap” – depend at least in part on essay on call by jack, a differing approach to source materials (they historicize different things). Yet Elizabeth Maddock Dillon insists that what’s really at play here is “a large area of noncoincidence between the aims and desires of literary studies and short essay of nature historical studies,” one that focuses literary scholars’ attention on “an essential aspect of the community generated by the advent of an on call by jack, Atlantic World: namely a set of signifying practices (and erasures) that shaped the world we inhabit today.” 39 39. Take again, for instance, one of the most widely circulated late-eighteenth-century accounts of obeah and questions its powers, Benjamin Moseley’s description of obeah in his 1799 Treatise on Sugar . 42 42.
In addition to its appearance in the Jamaican newspaper The Royal Gazette and in multiple iterations of longer works published in London, excerpts of Moseley’s discussion of obeah appeared in newspapers in Boston ( Boston Gazette , 26 March 1801), Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania ( The Gleaner , 21 January 1814), New York City ( New-York Courier , 9 October 1816), Albany, New York ( The Albany Advertiser , 12 October 1816), Washington, D.C. View all notes As we discuss above, Moseley’s account offers a classic representation of obeah-as-assemblage, listing the ostensibly natural objects that an obeah might contain and making visible the ways in which obeah’s powers confound empiricist modes of observation. Moseley’s text also , and paradoxically, opens up the possibility that we can see how colonial authors sought to orient their readerships to essay wild by jack, the phenomenon they were describing – the way that the tenuous project of making obeah knowable, with all its limits, also sought to teach audiences how to understand how obeah figured into the world in which they lived. Here is the full passage in which Moseley’s list of an obeah’s contents appears: OBI, for short essay of nature, the purposes of bewitching people, or consuming them by essay of the wild by jack lingering illness, is made of of essay, grave dirt, hair, teeth of essay of the wild by jack, sharks, and other creatures, blood, feathers, egg-shells, images in wax, the peoplesof ma resume, hearts of birds, and some potent roots, weeds, and bushes, of which Europeans are at this time ignorant; but which were known, for essay on call london, the same purposes, to essay about, the ancients. In moments such as these we see not what obeah was in its own right, but rather the newspaper terminology, web of relations to which colonial authors thought it belonged. Turning an eye toward these texts’ aesthetic properties shows how they seek to invest their audiences in what is, at its heart, an of the wild london, orienting project: one in which the powers that these texts struggle and sometimes fail to trace back to the natural world are still brought into their readers’ everyday lives in some form.
When he lists the on conservation, raw ingredients that compose an obeah, Moseley asks his readers to see the single objects he has extracted from it – a slip of parchment, an eggshell, a feather – as individual representatives of larger categories of familiar objects. As he makes the obeah’s disaggregated components available to sense perception, Moseley renders obeah, in some senses, ordinary – part of the background of objects one encounters in one’s everyday life. Essay Of The Wild London! Yet mixed into these moments of recognition are a set of descriptions that cannot be directly verified through the alcoholic essay, senses: one has no way to know that what Moseley describes as “the blood of a black cat” came from a cat that was not brown or gray, or that it came from a cat at all. These are the moments at on call by jack which, as we’ve noted above, the text veers toward the anonymous, romantic and essay on call by jack london especially gothic modes that Tim Watson discusses. And they are the pursuit of happyness questions, moments in essay on call of the by jack which obeah’s recognizability as a part of the material world metropolitans and colonials shared relied both on your mother, the familiarity of material objects and the legibility of particular genres and tropes: the mythical powers of grave dirt, the magical efficacy of a black cat. Reading obeah, in other words, meant knowing it as a part of other stories, as something that could be recognized in the fictions and on call wild london narratives that circulated in one’s culture.
As they cross-pollinated obeah with the gothic, in particular, these texts aligned it with a cluster of possibly-real, possibly-imaginary dangers, horrors, and thrills that, when they appear in fictive texts, become at of happyness questions once part of how the world might be and something that might be imaginary, unreal. In other words, they teach readers to essay on call of the wild london, adopt an attitude of provisionality, to perceive obeah as something of interest that may or may not be real. cotton mather essays COTTON MATHER (1662/3-1727/8). On Call Of The London! The eldest son of New England's leading divine, Increase Mather, and grandson of the colony's spiritual founders Richaard Mather and John Cotton, Mather was born in Boston, educated at Harvard (B.A. Edu! 1678; M.A. 1681), and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Glasgow University (1710). As pastor of Boston's Second Church (Congregational), he came into the political limelight during America's version of the essay, Glorious Revolution, when Bostonians deposed their royal governor, Sir Edmund Andros (April 1689). During the of essay, witchcraft debacle (1692-93), Mather both warns the essay on call of the wild by jack, Salem judges against essay your mother, admitting spectral evidence as grounds for indictment and advocates prayer and fasting to cure the essay on call wild london, afflicted, but he also writes New England's official defense of the alcoholic essay, court's procedures on which his modern reputation largely depends: The Wonders of the Invisible World (1693). As the Lord's remembrancer and keeper of the Puritan conscience, he writes the grandest of American jeremiads, his epic church history Magnalia Christi Americana (1702). Like his father a staunch defender of Puritan orthodoxy, Mather persuades Elihu Yale, a London merchant and practicing Anglican, to endow Yale University (1703) as the essay on call wild by jack, new nursery of Puritanism, when Harvard seemed to become too liberal in its teaching and too independent in its thinking. Ma Resume! If such endeavors bespeak Mather's partisan politics on the one hand and his transcendent thinking on the other, it is his chiliastic credo that leads him to champion Pietist ecumenism, his effort to unite all Christian denominations in New England, nay all Christians, Jews, and Moslems in the Orient and Occident, under the umbrella of his 3 Maxims of Piety to on call of the london hasten the Second Coming of Christ.
Likewise, his interest in the New Sciences and in new medical theories distinguishes Mather from his American contemporaries. He is elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1713), defends and popularizes the short essay on conservation, new scientific theories of Henry More, William Derham, John Ray, Thomas Burnet, William Whiston, Sir Isaac Newton, and others, and staunchly advocates a new germ theory and inoculation against smallpox in the face of the on call by jack london, united opposition of Boston's physicians during the epidemic of 1721. Whereas Increase Mather never quite made the newspaper, transition into the Enlightenment, his son Cotton had come full circle; he represents the best of early Enlightenment thinking in colonial America. His contributions to the literature of the New England Errand are as diverse as his publications are prolific and inexhaustible. Essay Of The! In all, he published more than four hundred works on all aspects of the contemporary debate: theological, historical, biographical, political, and of happyness essay questions scientific. It is therefore deplorable that Mather's reputation is still largely overshadowed by the specter of Salem witchcraft. No single work of essay of the wild by jack london Mather's gargantuan publication record does justice to his long, productive career in New England's foremost pulpit, but several representative types afford a glimpse at his overall achievement. The Diary of your mother Cotton Mather (Vol. I, 1911; II, 1912; III, 1964) provides a more comprehensive insight into his volatile nature than his autobiography Paterna (1976). Essay London! His Diary is overview a Puritan document par excellence.
It focuses on him as an instrument of divine providence in the world. If his public persona in his sermons is overbearing and bombastic, his private persona in his Diary is modest and unostentatious: a doting son, loving father, affectionate husband, and caring Pastor Evangelicus--fully aware of his own weaknesses. Mather's mythic image still rests on his involvement in the Salem witchcraft debacle (1692-93) and on essay of the wild by jack london, Robert Calef's libelling allegations in More Wonders of the Invisible World (1700). Mather's most important publications on the supernatural are Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcraft and Possessions (1689) and Wonders of the Invisible World (1693). The former mostly recounts the ma resume, possessions and antics of the Goodwin children, the eldest of whom Mather observed in essay of the by jack london his own home and eventually cured through fasting, prayer, and patient reassurance. Anonymous! While to modern readers the narrative smacks of singular gullibility, Mather's practical tests, careful observations, and--most important--sanative procedure in indemnifying the girl's excesses, bespeak his experimental treatment of the case. The latter work aims at several purposes. Essay Wild By Jack London! On the one hand, Wonders is newspaper edu New England's official defense of the court's verdict and testimony to on call wild the power of Satan and his minions; on the other, it is Mather's contribution to pneumatology, with John Gaul, Sir Matthew Hale, John Dee, William Perkins, Joseph Glanvill, and anonymous essay Richard Baxter in the lead. Before Mather excerpts the six most notorious cases of Salem witchcraft, he buttresses his account with the official endorsement of Lt. Of The Wild! Governor William Stoughton, with a disquisition on the devil's machinations described by the best authorities that the peoplesof ma resume, subject affords, with a previously delivered sermon at Andover, and with his own experimentations.
Mather's Wonders , however, does not end without a due note of caution. On Call Of The By Jack! While exposing Satan's plot to overthrow New England's churches, Mather also recommends his father's caveat Cases of Conscience (1693), thus effectively rejecting the use of spectral evidence as grounds for essay conviction and condemning confessions extracted under torture. What ties the various parts together is Mather's millenarian theme of Christ's imminence, of which Satan's plot is the best evidence. Robert Calef's accusation that Mather and his ilk incited the hysteria is, perhaps, unfounded, but Calef's charge of Mather's ambidextrous disposition seems warranted. For while Mather defends the court's verdict and justifies the of the by jack, government's position, he also voices his great discomfort with the court's procedure in the matter. Wonders appeared in print just when the trials were halting, but it remains, in peoplesof ma resume his own words, that reviled Book, a bane to his name.
His most enduring and, at once, most famous legacy is his Puritan epic Magnalia Christi Americana (London, 1702), an ecclesiastical history of New England in the contemporary tradition of providence literature. In seven books of essay by jack uneven length, Mather commemorates on an epic scale virtually every aspect of New England's formative period (1620-1698). From a literary point of terminology view, Mather's Plutarchan biographies of New England's governors and ministers (book 2) are of essay by jack london greatest interest. Pursuit! Puritan heroes are juxtaposed with heroes of classical and biblical antiquity, with the former surpassing the on call wild by jack london, latter by emulating their outstanding characteristics. About Your Mother! Even though each life follows the pattern of medieval hagiography, he does not fail to mention some of his heroes' shortcomings and how they overcame them.
Since its appearance, Magnalia Christi Americana has been criticized for its lack of thematic unity, bombastic style, and undigested material. However flawed by modern standards, each of the seven books develops a specific theme, unified by Mather's Virgilian theme of the mighty works of Christ in the Western hemisphere; Mather's Baroque style--though outdated by his standards of his time--is entirely consistent with his own stylistic principles delineated in Manuductio ad Ministerium (1726): to entertain with stylistic flourishes while instructing with pearls of wisdom. Finally, Mather's consistent narrative voice and wild london rhetorical intent unifies his subject matter as the grandest of jeremiads that American Puritanism has brought forth. Out of Mather's Pietist impulse and scientific endeavor grow three strands of descriptive works, the best examples of which are his civic-minded Bonifacius (1710), his compendium of the New Sciences The Christian Philosopher (1720/1), his medical handbook The Angel of Bethesda (wr. 1723/24, publ. Essay On Call London! 1972), his manual for the ministry Manuductio ad Ministerium (1726), and his hermeneutical defense of eschatology The Threefold Paradise: Triparadisus (wr. 1712, 1720-27; publ.
1995). Of Happyness Essay! Mather's Bonifacius, An Essay . . . to essay of the wild london Do Good represents the most comprehensive expression of his life's purpose: Fructuosis , to be serviceable to one's fellow man. His lifelong interest in the German Pietist movement of short essay on conservation his Frederician colleague August Hermann Francke, of Halle (Saxony), convinced Mather that specific practical advice rather than pious exhortations could engender social reform. His subsequent essays (chapters) address all classes of society and their various occupations. In typical Renaissance fashion, Mather was at home in virtually every discipline of human knowledge, ancient and modern. Though a theologian by vocation, he was a virtuoso of science by avocation, as his Curiosa Americana (1712, 1714) and his Christian Philosopher (1720/1) attest. In the former, he describes in more than 23 separate epistles his pseudo-scientific observations of the American flora and fauna, ornithology, birth defects, rattlesnakes, earthquakes, Indian customs, and on call wild by jack london many other American curiosities. Perfectly consistent with European standards of the time, Curiosa also pioneers theories of psychogenic causes of disease and of plant hybridization, the earliest known account, which became the basis for the Linnaean system of botany. The Royal Society of London bestowed upon Mather the prestigious title of F.R.S. (1713).
He was only the eighth colonial American to on conservation of nature become a Fellow. Like Increase Mather's Illustrious Providences (1684), Cotton Mather's Christian Philosopher provides a rational foundation for Christianity, attempting to reconcile Scripture revelation with the New Sciences. But unlike his father's earlier work, Christian Philosopher moves with ease between scientific explanations and theological justifications. Above all else, Cotton Mather demonstrates the adaptability of Calvinism to a new philosophy in its progress toward the Transcendentalism of the nineteenth century. As an experimenter of medicine, Mather was as qualified as any medical practitioner in the Old and New World, for he studied medicine at Harvard when his adolescent stammer seemed to render him unsuitable for the ministry. His lifelong interest and solid foundation is apparent in this single, most comprehensive medical handbook in colonial America, The Angel of Bethesda (wr. Essay Of The Wild! 1723/24, publ. 1972). Its threefold purpose--religious, medical, scientific--is an outgrowth of overview of essay organization his practical Pietism: to provide the essay of the london, indigent with a medical handbook in the absence of a physician. In 66 chapters (or Capsulae, as he wittily calls them), Mather quotes from more than 250 of the questions, best medical authorities, borrowing remedies from the by jack, Galenical, chemical, and occult schools of medicine.
Here loom large such worthies as Hippocrates, Galen, Paracelsus, Zoroaster, Plato, but also van Helmont, Boyle, and Sydenham. Each capsula follows the same pattern: (1) Mather's pious improvement on the disease, followed by (2) its clear description and interpretation, and (3) the best-known remedies and dosages for the possible cure of the ailment. Yet Mather's Angel is questions remarkable not for its singular medical lore, but for its highly advanced theories that are of continuing interest to modern medicine. Among still valuable recommendations are his prophylactic rules of temperate diet, physical exercise, and discouragement of smoking. His most enduring legacy, however, is his method of overcoming stammer, his benevolent treatment of psychiatric cases, his discussion of psychosomatic causes of illness, his immunological recommendations on inoculation against essay wild, smallpox (eighty years before Edward Jenner developed his vaccine), and his disquisition on germ theory (animalculae)--long before Lister and pursuit of happyness questions Pasteur discovered their bacteriological approaches to preventive medicine in the nineteenth century. The warm, comforting, and essay of the by jack understanding tone of Mather's Angel , its clear structure and consistent narrative voice, are characteristically embellished by peoplesof ma resume, his entertaining wit, nuggets of wisdom, and occasional metaphors and puns. In light of his scientific achievements, one almost forgets that Cotton Mather was a pastor and essay wild minister first and foremost. Anticipating his imminent departure from this world, he hastened to essay of nature write his Manuductio ad Ministerium (1726), a book-length manual for the ministry. Short on sectarian ideology, Manuductio embodies Mather's educational principles for the gentleman minister: Next to the traditional classical languages, he recommends such modern languages as French and Spanish; he devalues the customary Aristotelian curriculum of rhetoric, logic, and metaphysics in essay on call of the wild by jack london favor of the new Cartesian logic implemented at Harvard, and essay advises students to essay of the london spend their time on the study of the Bible, German Pietism, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, the New Sciences, geography, ancient and modern history and biography, as well as music for refreshment and questions poetry for on call london recreation.
His revealing recommendations on anonymous essay, style (not an end in itself but a means to an end), composition of sermons, and polished oratory, evince, just how far Mather had come in his old age: the on call of the wild london, minister of the newspaper, future was to be above all a humane, liberal, erudite gentleman pastor, whose reformed Calvinism, humanistic scholarship, and polished grace did not neglect such practical matters as a balanced diet and physical exercise to offset the of the london, stress of newspaper terminology edu his duties. Cotton Mather's lifelong preoccupation with millennialism and on call of the wild london its significance to his thought and work have only recently attracted full-scale attention. Beginning with Things to essay be Look'd for (1691), he published more than fifty works in which eschatology played a major role. In fact, it is hard to read any of his writings without finding some reference to the imminence of Christ's Second Coming. Wild London! Of his major works on that topic, three stand out: Problema Theologicum (wr. 1695-1703; publ.
1994), a 95-page manuscript reflecting the principal issues in Mather's early millennialism; Triparadisus , his definitive treatment of his millenarian theories (387 ms. pages) in overview of essay organization response to wild london the hermeneutical debate in Europe; and his Biblia Americana , a gargantuan and unfinished critical commentary on the Bible in newspaper terminology edu six folio volumes (c. 4,500 pages folio), fortified with synopses of the best hermeneutical scholarship of the day. Unlike his earlier Problema Theologicum in which Mather advances an inchoate system of pre- and essay on call of the london postmillennialist theories, his Threefold Paradise ( Triparadisus ) is his most comprehensive study of apocalypticism. As a hermeneutical defense of revealed religion, Mather's discourse seeks to negotiate between orthodox exegesis of the descriptive essay your mother, prophecies and the new philological and of the london historical-contextual challenges to the Scriptures by such European scholars as Hugo Grotius, Thomas Hobbes, Baruch Spinoza, Richard Simon, Henry Hammond, Thomas Burnet, William Whiston, and Anthony Collins. Threefold Paradise marks Mather's decisive break from the pursuit of happyness, hermeneutical positions he had inherited from his intellectual forebears but also represents the culmination of his lifelong interest in eschatology, which lay at the core of his cosmology and which was the fundamental mainspring of his ministerial and theological office.
From 1720 to 1726, Mather's exegesis underwent a radical shift from a futurist interpretation of the prophecies to a preterit position--from arguing that several signs of Christ's return were still to be fulfilled, to asserting that all signs had been given several times over. Part I of of the Mather's Threefold Paradise delineates the history and location of the ma resume, Garden of essay by jack london Eden as evidenced in the Pentateuch, ancient histories, patristic literature, and contemporary travel accounts. Part II is largely a refutation of psychopannychism, that is, a rebuttal of the idea that the soul is dormant, and a defense of the soul's immortality. Part III is by far the questions, longest and essay by jack most valuable discussion and covers in twelve subsections a variety of topics affected by the hermeneutical revisionism then taking shape in Europe: the tradition of a literal conflagration of the Earth, his defense of a literal New Heaven and New Earth during the millennium, his allegorization of the essay, conversion of the Jewish people, and his prophetic timetables calculating the millennial reign of essay on call of the wild by jack london Christ. In this late work then, Mather emerges as colonial America's greatest theologian before Jonathan Edwards.
